At Cranham, we believe that Mathematics is an integral part of a child’s life. Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives.
Our aims are:
Developing problem solving and reasoning skills in mathematics.
Improving the breadth of questioning from adults and children to increasing children’s use of accurate vocabulary.
Ensuring all staff know pupil data for their group well to maximise opportunities in learning and to identify gaps.
Ensuring that all children improve their quick recall of facts in line with year group expectations.
All children have access to quality first teaching. All children have the opportunity to use physical resources to develop conceptual understanding.
We love Maths!
We use the Can Do maths programme and this supports our principles:
We know that maths is hard sometimes - we work at it and show courage.
We have a growth mindset - we believe that we can get better at maths.
We don't learn tricks - our teaching is focused on building secure understanding.
Our play based approach in EYFS allows children to explore the concepts taught in our daily maths session throughout the week. As the Reception Year progresses, the class teacher’s plans allow for a smooth progression into National Curriculum Programmes of Study for KS1.
