Homework expectations
Homework is a wonderful way of keeping our parents in touch with what children are learning about at school. When topics are consolidated through conversations and opportunities at home, it is much more likely for the learning involved to make it into a child's long term memory. But getting the balance for homework is always tricky and it is hard to meet the requirements of all families. Some families like to engage in a lot of homework while others find it difficult to get this completed in their busy timetables. This is totally understandable, and for this reason we offer a mix of expected homework and optional homework. As children move up through the school, the homework expectations become greater - this is in order to prepare them for the big step up to secondary school. The expectations for each class are set out below and we would encourage you and your child to engage with them as much as you can (without making home a battle scene!) If supporting your child with homework becomes challenging for any reason, please come and see us for a chat.
Our main focus is of course on reading. Reading is vitally important to your child’s education. Statistically, children who read more, are significantly more successful in their future lives than their peers who read less. Sometimes encouragement and perseverance are required, as reading regularly can be HARD. It can also be incredibly enjoyable!
To encourage children to engage with homework, we reward dojos for every piece completed and for regular reading.
